Stephen Tanzer’s international WINE CELLAR

Stephen Tanzer’s international WINE CELLAR · Januar 2011

“…you quickly learn what the two (Werner and Volker Knipser) are trying to do: make serious wines that are fun to drink. Here that means embracing acidity and keeping the alcohol at a civil level. Although I have described only three classical wines below, this odd couple couple does everything well, making some of the greatest chardonnay and pinot gris in Germany, a syrah that could pass for a Cote-Rotie, and a Bordeaux blend (XR) that, like many of their wines, is released years after the harvest. This is one of the finest estates in all of Germany.”

2009 Mandelpfad Riesling Grosses Gewächs: ”Rich, brothy aromas of white peach, hazelnut and basil. The sweet peach fruit is at first held in check by the wine’s salty acidity, but its creamy depth becomes apparent on the long, spicy finish. 91/100.”

2008 Burgweg Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs: “Full ruby. Smoky aromas of strawberry, smoky bacon fat and rose hip. Bright lush berry fruit enriched by a warm spicy character. Nicely balanced wine with real depth and grip, and a nobly persistent finish featuring sweet tannins. 92/100.”

2008 Kirschgarten Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs: “Deep, brooding ruby. Deep aromas of  blackcurrant, hazelnut and vanilla. Seductively rich in texture, with a succulent blackberry flavour framed by refined tannins. This hugely deep, classically structured wine ends on a persistently spicy finish. Pinot noir doesn’t come much better in Germany. 93/100.“
