Knipser-Johannishof. Laumersheim

by Joel B. Payne

They now use that wood more with the pinot varieties, in particular on red wines, which are often among the finest produced in Germany. Generally sold a year later than those of their competitors, the 2003 reds had not yet been released as we went to print. In the past few years the Knipsers have also proven that excellent riesling can be made far below the upper slopes of the Mittelhaaardt.

2004 Sauvignon Blanc Spätlese trocken (89 Points):

Exotic aromas of gooseberry, mint and vanilla. The full-bodied citrus fruit flavors are driven by vibrant acidity and exuberant spices. Reminiscent of sauvignon from Didier Dageneau, this wine shows impressive depth and length.

2004 Laumersheim Mandelberg Steinbuckel Riesling Spätlese trocken Grosses Gewächs (89 Points):

High-toned aromas of peach pit, toasted almond and mint. Compact and austere, with a juicy apricot flavor that’s slow to surface. The subtle smokiness and salty minerality combine for a discreet but alluring finish.

2004 Dirmsteiner Mandelpfad Himmelsrech Riesling Spätlese trocken Grosses Gewächs (90 Points):

Rich, brothy aromas of white peach, hazelnut and basil. The sweet peach fruit is at first held in check by the chalky acidity, but the wine’s creamy depth becomes apparent on the long and spicy finish.

Also recommended:

  • 2004 Laumersheimer Kapellenberg Riesling Kabinett trocken (85 Points)
  • 2004 Laumersheimer Mandelberg Grauburgunder Auslese trocken (86 Points)
  • 2003 Chardonnay Auslese trocken **** (91 Points)“
