WINE FROM THE FRUIT BASKET

WINE FROM THE FRUIT BASKET by Winthrop Haeger

„The Pfalz is warm and dry – and the most dynamic vineyard region in Germany today.

...Pinot Noir is the object of intensive efforts at many estates, including Knipser in Laumersheim...While it is too early to generalize about pinot noir here, Knipser make pretty, elegant, rose-scented ones, displaying wild rasperry fruit on a chalky midpalate background, from the Burgweg vineyard in Grosskarlbach...Beyond pinot, the Pfalz produces some astonishing, deep-hued, fleshy, savory, almost un-German reds from st.laurent, an early ripening, thick-skinned variety once grown in Alsace but now confined mostly to Austria...a 2001 from Knipser, blending aromas of balsam with flavors of rose water and dark berries...Another grape, dornfelder shows a meaty, jammy one made at Knipser.“
